        <title>Pacifica Quartet to Perform at HCCC</title>
        <link>http://www.herkimer.edu/news/?id=133</link>
        <description>The Pacifica Quartet will perform at Herkimer County Community College on Saturday, November 1 at 8:00 p.m. The concert is the third performance of The Robert H. Wood Great Artists Series.

Recognized for its virtuosity, exuberant performance style, and often daring repertory choices, the Pacifica Quartet has carved out a compelling musical path. Since the group first came together in 1994, the ensemble has swept top prizes in several leading international competitions from the Cleveland Quartet Award to the Naumburg. In 2006, the Pacifica was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant - only the second chamber music ensemble ever to be selected.

The Pacifica Quartet tours extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia, performing in the world's major concert halls in such cities as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, Tokyo, and Toronto. For more information about The Pacifica Quartet, visit www.pacificaquartet.com.

The Robert H. Wood Great Artists Series is the result of a generous endowment made by the late Robert H. Wood, a long-time resident of Ilion, NY. The Robert H. Wood Great Artists Series sponsors at least two annual classical music performances to bring together residents of all ages to enjoy high-caliber classical concerts.

Beginning October 1, advance sale reserved tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for $15. Tickets sold at the door will be $20. Additional concert information and ticket reservation forms are available at http://www.herkimer.edu/greatartists.htm.

        <title>Herzog Publishes Article</title>
        <link>http://www.herkimer.edu/news/?id=130</link>
        <description>Jennifer Herzog, Assistant Professor of Biology at Herkimer County Community College, recently published an article ASMCUE: From Buffalo to Boston and Celebrating 15 Years! in MicrobeLibrary’s Focus on Microbiology Education (FOME) newsmagazine.

FOME provides undergraduate microbiology educators with technical, yet practical and feasible advice for improving teaching and learning in the microbiological sciences.

“The articles published in FOME are often consulted by microbiology and/or biology educators when they are looking for new ideas or new ways of thinking in microbiology teaching or research,” said Lucy Kluckhohn Jones, professor in the life sciences department of Santa Monica College, Santa Monica, CA, and editor-in-chief of FOME. “Educators rely heavily on MicrobeLibrary for enriching the classroom and laboratory experiences.”

Herzog’s article is an important addition to MicrobeLibrary, an online, searchable collection of more than 2,000 peer-reviewed resources for undergraduate microbiology and biology education. Given the current social and political climate, it is more important than ever that authoritative materials are available to help college faculty teach students about the significance and impact of microorganisms in the world.

FOME is one of many resources available in MicrobeLibrary. The library builds upon the scientific expertise, intellectual creativity, and private collections of the members of ASM and other researchers of microbiology and biology from around the world; it receives more than 1 million hits per month.

Herzog was appointed to the HCCC faculty in 2001. She holds a B.S. from Utica College of Syracuse University and an M.S. from Yale University School of Medicine.

        <description>The SUNY Board of Trustees today approved the appointment of Dr. Ann Marie Murray as President of Herkimer County Community College, effective August 11, 2008, as approved by the Board of Trustees at the College in May.

Dr. Murray currently is the vice president for academic affairs at Broome Community College, a post she has held since 2005.  In that capacity, she has been responsible for the oversight of all of the academic programs and functions of the college, including schools of business, liberal arts and human services, and applied science, continuing education, international education, learning resource center, teaching resource center, and online learning. SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman Carl T. Hayden said, &quot;Herkimer County Community College recently celebrated 40 years of service to families and businesses in the Mohawk Valley, where the campus provides accessible and affordable education and training to thousands of students each year.  I am very confident that the search committee has found the ideal candidate to carry on the Herkimer tradition. On behalf of the Board and SUNY System Administration, I also wish to thank Ron Williams for his long and esteemed service as the campus’ president.&quot;

Interim SUNY Chancellor Dr. John B. Clark said, &quot;Dr. Murray’s wealth of experience in the community college sector – particularly at two of SUNY’s strongest campuses – is certain to bring great benefit to HCCC students, faculty and staff as well as the surrounding community. It has been my pleasure to recommend that this appointment and I commend the Board of Trustees at SUNY for naming Dr. Murray to this important position.&quot;

Dr. Murray said, &quot;I am very thankful to the SUNY Board of Trustees for their confidence in my ability to serve Herkimer County Community College as its third president. <link>http://www.herkimer.edu/news/?id=109</link>
        <description>Herkimer County Community College received the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup award for its second place national finish among non-scholarship Division III community college athletic programs in 2007-2008. The NATYCAA Cup awards are given annually to recognize overall athletic program excellence by two-year colleges at the national level. This is the third consecutive year that Herkimer has won a NATYCAA Cup, and the first time in college history to finish second.
The College of DuPage (IL) came in first place and Gloucester County College (NJ) came in third. Herkimer received the top-ranking among scholarship and non-scholarship community college athletic programs in New York State. The Generals earned 143 points for national placements in women’s and men’s cross country, women’s and men’s bowling, women’s and men’s swimming, women’s and men’s track and field, women’s and men’s lacrosse and men’s soccer.
HCCC Director of Athletics Donald Dutcher received the award at the national convention in Dallas Texas. “We are very proud of this ranking. It’s a testament to a long history of hard work on the part of the entire athletic department staff and student athletes, together with the support of our faculty and the College administration. It is a total team effort,” said Dutcher.
NATYCAA is the professional organization of two-year college athletic administrators with membership open to all two-year colleges in the nation.

        <title>Notice Regarding Stolen Data</title>
        <link>http://www.herkimer.edu/news/?id=84</link>
        <description>SunGard Higher Education, a software company that has provided IT services to Herkimer County Community College and the State University of New York for a number of years, notified SUNY that a laptop belonging to one of their consultants was stolen and has not been recovered. The laptop was protected with a strong password to access the operating system. While identity theft does not appear to be the motive behind the incident, we regard all information security matters very seriously and are working with SunGard Higher Education to take necessary steps to protect our students and constituents. HCCC's Information Services department has analyzed and verified the data, and the College is notifying by mail all those who may be affected. SunGard will offer affected individuals a two full years of free credit monitoring service through Triple AlertSM.

If you received a notification letter from HCCC, it includes a PIN--not a credit monitoring activation code as described in the letter. To get your credit monitoring activation code, please call the Sungard information center at 866-520-2408, give the representative your PIN, and they will give you a credit monitoring activation code as well as helpful step-by-step instructions.</description>
